  33. As primarily a shooter/lighter, I think I may have something 
  34. to add to this discussion.  Your question is interesting and
  35. complex.  Lots of stuff to muse about.

  37. This would depend not only on the atmospheric conditions
  38. (overcast, clear, etc.) but on the time of day.  Dawn and
  39. dusk are closer to 3200K than the full daylight's 5600K.
  40.  
  41. This is due to the angle of the sun's rays, and the diffusion
  42. of the blue and passage of red at sharper angles.  (Physics
  43. majors help here please!)  High overcast daylight _can_ just
  44. about go off the Kelvin scale...way above 5600K!  I guess what
  45. I'm getting at is that you should use whatever looks right and
  46. fits the mood, rather than adhering to a hard and fast formula.

  48. BTW, cameras can now do utterly amazing things with white
  49. balance, I have balanced to high-pressure sodium (those orange
  50. street lights, also used in gymnasiums, factories, etc.) and 
  51. it worked.  I don't advise it for night street shooting though, 
  52. as I like a _small_ (25W) cam-top light and preset to 3200K, 
  53. the street lamps look their normal orange and skin tones look 
  54. "right" using that setup.  (I've done several things, including
  55. cop ride-alongs, this way!)

  57. As above, use what _looks the best_ and fits the mood of the
  58. piece.
